Tipping in Aligner Treatment

What is tipping?

In Aligner treatment, crown tipping is the tilting of the crown of the tooth without moving the apex of the root. Root tipping is tilting of the root of the tooth without moving the apex of the crown.

Tipping can be controlled or uncontrolled:

Controlled tipping occurs around the tooth apex.
Uncontrolled tipping occurs around the CER.

The clear aligner showed the ability to move teeth up to 6 mm by tipping incrementally into the spaces. Clear aligners can easily tip crowns but cannot tip the roots because of the lack of control of the teeth movements. The role of uncontrolled tipping and loss of anchorage complicates the progression of aligners.

The accuracy of tipping for clear aligners was found to be ranged from 40.5% to 55 %. The mean accuracy of premolar tipping in clear aligner is 55% and canine tipping is 44%.
