Do’s And Don’ts of Selecting Aligner Cases

Cases that are ideal for aligner treatment are:

Deep bite
Deep bite refers to the excess overlap of upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. This condition can cause sores or ulcers on the roof of your mouth. This case can be improved with the help of clear aligner treatment.

Crowding
Crowding is the lack of space for all the teeth to fit normally in the upper or lower jaw. Insufficient space in either of the jaw can cause crowding. Ideally, crowding up to 3mm can be corrected with clear aligners.

Spacing
Spacing is gaps between your teeth, it can be local only up to front teeth or all the teeth in arch may have spacing. If the spacing is less than 3mm it is mild spacing, moderate spacing is classified as more than 3mm up to 6 mm. mild to moderate cases of spacing can be corrected with clear aligners.

Intrusion
An intrusion of less than 2 mm in front teeth and less than 1 mm in back teeth can be treated with the help of clear aligner.

Narrow arches
The case with narrow arches can be corrected with clear aligners through expansion without tipping the teeth excessively.

Rotation
30 degrees rotation of incisors, 20 degrees with canine and 15 degrees with premolar is the acceptable case for clear aligners. Higher degree rotation cases should not be selected in clear aligner cases.

Cases which are not ideal for clear aligners

Impacted teeth
Impacted teeth is where the teeth fails to fully grow out of the gums. In these cases clear aligner is not recommended.

Skeletal problem causing dental malalignment
Clear aligners can only correct dental malalignment such as crowding, spacing, deep bite etc. skeletal problems are corrected through orthognathic surgery.

Overjet more than 12 mm
Mild to moderate overjet can be corrected with clear aligners. But severe overjet that is more than 12 mm cannot be correct by clear aligners.

Cleft palate
Cases with cleft palate are not recommemded in treatment of clear aligners as it is a skeletal deformity.

Severe craniofacial anomaly
Craniofacial anomalies are deformaties that affect a child’s head and facial bones. These disorders are typically present at birth and can range from mild to severe. These cases are not indicated in clear aligner treatment.
